Maurice Lindsay CBE (21 July – 30 April ) was a Scottish broadcaster, writer and was born in was educated at The Glasgow Academy where he was a pupil from In later life, he served as an Honorary Governor of the school. After serving in World War II he became a radio broadcaster, also editing the anthology Modern Scottish Poetry, and writing music. Lochhead earned her living at this time by teaching art in secondary schools in Bristol, Glasgow and Cumbernauld. In her second collection, Islands, was published and she wrote and performed in Sugar and Spite at the Traverse, was awarded the first Scottish/Canadian Writers’ Exchange Fellowship the same year, and went to Toronto, then lived in the USA after the fellowship.

Anyway, a wee while ago I got a nice present from some good friends of mine, a little book called – yes – Bairnsangs, Nursery Rhymes in Scots, by Sandy Thomas Ross, charmingly illustrated by Charles Summers (Macmillan, ). This contains some good stuff, though I doubt it has had much exposure in the nursery, or at school.
